Watching A Documentary About WWII

This week end, I had a chance to watch some of the Ken Burns documentary “The War” on one of the local PBS stations. For the first time, I was struck by the annihilation we poured out on the people we were fighting. I was also struck by how commanders sitting in field tents or even comfy offices threw away life. They sent men rushing across open fields and running rivers into situation in which there was no cover. They constantly made decisions based on convenience rather than pragmatism. Life was cheap, regardless of which side you where on.

While I personally struggle with the concept of just warfare, believing somewhat that if we are to love our neighbors as ourselves and that we may have to use force to help protect them at times, I’m appalled at the devastation that full scale warfare wroughts. Not just the damage to property, but to lives. Schools and hospitals destroyed. Everything a person has ever owned, gone in a flash. It’s like watching hundreds of tornadoes sweep through a community, leaving nothing intact. I’ve left Iraq alone because I’m emotionally tangled up in it, knowing people who are there and all that, and having been such a supporter of the war at one time…but now? I don’t know. In many ways, I feel that all we did over there was open up the doors for Iraqis to kill each other more openly. Did bringing down Saddam really make things better, or did we clear the way for more violence by taking away their dictator. Not to mention the massive money pit it’s turned into.

You know, even looking out side of the military and the way those in power use the common soldier as a commodity, a thing to be used up and discarded when finished, we see the same type of attitude in those in power with in our political structure: The common man is just a resource to be used. Today I read in the news about how the government wants to throw more money at AIG, and the automakers are showing up at the capital with their hands out while politicians are lining up to dole out money. Where does that money come from? The taxes that “Middle America” pays. We are just a source of revenue for the government’s whims, reaping no benefit for our labor. Even as i sit home sick today, watching my wife work (She works for one of the big box retailers and has the benefit of telecommuting), it’s sad to that she has to work for the first 4 1/2 months of the year just pay her tax burden. Just another resource in the governments eyes.

And people wonder why I became an Anarchist.
